Google AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that Google Search shows above the classic results for some queries, answering the question in a few sentences or a short list and linking to the web pages the answer drew on.
For a brand, an AI Overview is a new first position: it sits above the organic results, it can name you or your competitors, and it decides which pages get a link.
How Google AI Overviews work
Google launched AI Overviews in the US in May 2024, after testing the idea as the Search Generative Experience (SGE) in Search Labs. When you search, Google first decides whether a generated summary is useful for that query. If it is, a Gemini model customized for Search writes the answer from pages in Google's index and adds links to the sources it used, shown inside or next to the summary.
Google's documentation explains that AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a technique called query fan-out: the system runs several related searches across subtopics and combines what it finds. That is why an AI Overview can cite pages that do not rank for the exact keyword you typed.
Three things make AI Overviews different from classic results:
- They are conditional. Many searches show no AI Overview at all, and the same keyword can trigger one on some days and not on others.
- They name brands in text. A summary can recommend, list or compare brands, with or without linking to them.
- They pick their own sources. The linked pages are not always the pages that rank highest below.
Why AI Overviews matter for brands
When an AI Overview answers the question, many users read it and stop there, which makes it a common cause of zero-click searches. The brands named in the summary get seen even without a click, and the pages it links to are the most likely to get the clicks that remain. If you rank first organically but the AI Overview recommends a competitor, the competitor gets the first impression.
This changes what you should report. Organic position still matters, but you also need to know how often your keywords trigger an AI Overview, how often it cites your site, and whether it names you in the text.
How to measure AI Overview visibility
Split the measurement into two rates, because an absent AI Overview is not a lost one:
AI Overview rate = keywords that showed an AI Overview / keywords checked × 100
AI Overview citation rate = AI Overviews that link to your site / AI Overviews shown × 100
Worked example: you check 200 keywords and 80 of them show an AI Overview, an AI Overview rate of 40%. Your site is linked in 20 of those 80, so your citation rate is 25%. Dividing the 20 citations by all 200 keywords would give 10% and hide the fact that you are cited in one of every four AI Overviews that actually appear.
Track brand mentions in the summary text separately from links. A summary can link to your guide without naming your brand, or name your brand while linking to a review site.
How to get cited in AI Overviews
- Stay eligible. Google's AI features documentation says a page only needs to be indexed and eligible for a snippet in Search. There is no extra markup to add.
- Answer the question early. Put a direct, self-contained answer near the top of the section, then support it with detail.
- Cover the subtopics. Because of query fan-out, pages that answer the follow-up questions (price, alternatives, use cases) have more chances to be picked.
- Earn mentions elsewhere. Reviews, comparisons and press that name your brand give the summary more reasons to name you too.
Common mistakes
- Treating a keyword with no AI Overview as a keyword where you lost visibility.
- Checking once and drawing conclusions: AI Overviews change from day to day.
- Counting links only and ignoring whether the text recommends a competitor.
- Checking from one country and assuming the result holds in every market.
How Mencoro tracks Google AI Overviews
Google AI Overview is one of the engines Mencoro checks, in the country you choose for each query. Each answer is stored with its text and its sources: your brand counts as mentioned when the summary names it, and a link counts as yours when it points to one of your domains, with its position among the sources. Because Google shows an AI Overview only for some searches, a check with no AI Overview returns no answer: it still uses its check, but it is left out of Coverage, since there was no answer in which your brand could appear. You see your AI Overview results next to your Google SERP positions for the same keywords. The methodology page explains every formula, and the Google AI Overview tracker shows the feature. For a one-off look, the free AI Overview checker tells you whether a keyword triggers an AI Overview and whether it cites your site.
