A zero-click search is a search that ends without the user clicking through to any website, because the results page, or an AI answer on it, already gave them what they needed.

The searcher is satisfied, the search engine kept them on its page, and the sites that supplied the answer may get no visit at all. What they can still get is visibility.

What causes zero-click searches

Zero-click searches existed long before AI. Any feature that answers on the results page can end a search without a click:

  • Direct answers: weather, time zones, conversions, calculators, sports scores.
  • Featured snippets and knowledge panels that quote the answer from a page.
  • Local results where the user calls or asks for directions from the listing.
  • AI answers: Google AI Overviews on top of the results and Google AI Mode in its own tab.

AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Perplexity take the idea further. Many conversations never produce a click at all, because the whole point is to get the answer inside the chat.

Why zero-click search matters for brands

If you judge search only by traffic, zero-click searches look like pure loss. They are not. When an AI answer recommends your product, or a snippet quotes your guide with your brand next to it, the searcher sees you even without visiting. The next time they need that product, they may search for you by name.

The real risk is the opposite case: the answer is given without a click and it names your competitor. You lose the visit and the impression. In zero-click search, the question stops being "did they click?" and becomes "were we in the answer?".

You cannot count other people's zero-click searches from your site, because they never reach it. What you can measure is the gap between being seen and being visited:

Click-through rate (CTR) = clicks / impressions × 100

Worked example: a query in Search Console has 10,000 impressions, an average position of 2 and 300 clicks, a CTR of 3%. A position that high with a CTR that low is a strong sign that the answer is being given on the page. Check the live results to see which module answers it.

Then measure the part that does not need a click, your presence in the answer itself:

Answer presence rate = answers that name your brand / answers checked × 100

If you check 100 AI answers for your main topics and your brand is named in 35, your answer presence rate is 35%. Put the two numbers side by side: CTR tells you how much traffic the query still sends, presence tells you whether you win the zero-click part.

How to adapt your strategy

  • Aim to be the answer. Write clear, quotable definitions and facts, so the snippet or the AI answer uses your wording and your name.
  • Give a reason to click. Tools, calculators, data, templates and detailed comparisons still earn visits after the quick answer.
  • Build your brand in other sources. AI answers name brands that others mention, so reviews, comparisons and press coverage count.
  • Report visibility as well as traffic. Add brand mentions in AI answers to your reporting so a drop in clicks is not read as a drop in presence.

Common mistakes

  • Reading a falling CTR as a ranking problem when the position has not moved.
  • Dropping informational content that no longer brings clicks but still gets you named.
  • Judging AI search only by referral traffic from ChatGPT or Perplexity.

How Mencoro measures visibility without clicks

Mencoro measures the part of search that happens before the click. For the prompts and keywords you choose, it checks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overview and Google AI Mode and records whether each answer names your brand and links to your site. Coverage is the share of checks with an answer in which you were named, and it leaves out checks where Google showed no AI Overview, so a missing summary does not count against you. Next to it you get your Google SERP position for the same keywords, so you can see where you rank but are absent from the answer. The visibility feature and the methodology page explain each metric. To test a keyword now, use the free AI Overview checker or the AI visibility checker.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

They reduce the traffic you can get from some queries, especially simple factual ones. They are not all lost value: if your brand is the one named in the answer, the searcher still sees you. The problem is only measuring clicks and missing that exposure.
Look for queries in Search Console with many impressions, a good average position and a low click-through rate, then check the live results page for an AI Overview, a featured snippet or another answer module. Those are the queries where the answer is being given before the click.
They add another answer above the organic results, so for the queries where they appear, some searchers get what they need without clicking. How much depends on the query: a quick fact is often answered in full, while a purchase decision usually still leads to a click.
