AI citations are the sources, usually links to web pages, that an AI engine such as ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews attaches to a generated answer to show where its information came from.

When an engine searches the web before answering, it retrieves pages, writes a summary and lists some of those pages as sources. Each of those sources is a citation. If one of them is on your domain, your site has been cited.

How AI citations work

Engines that use retrieval-augmented generation run one or more searches, read the retrieved pages and generate an answer grounded in them. The sources appear in different formats depending on the engine: numbered references inside the text, source cards next to the answer, or a list of links at the end.

Not every answer has citations. An engine can answer from what the model already knows, without searching, and then there are no sources to show. And the list of sources is not always the same as the pages that shaped the answer: some engines retrieve more pages than they display.

Citations vs mentions

A citation and a brand mention are two different signals:

  • Citation: a link to a source. It can point to your site without the answer ever naming your brand, for example when the engine uses your guide to explain a concept.
  • Mention: your brand named in the text. It can happen with no link to your site, for example when the engine recommends you based on a review site.

Track both. Being cited without being named means the engine trusts your content but does not present you as an option. Being named without being cited means other sites are doing the talking for you.

Why AI citations matter

  • Trust signal. A citation shows the engine considers your page a good source for the question.
  • Traffic. Citations are clickable, so they are the main path from an AI answer to your site.
  • A map of influence. The third-party pages cited for your category prompts (reviews, comparisons, directories, forums) are the pages shaping what engines say about you. They show you where to earn coverage.

How to measure AI citations

Three metrics cover most needs:

Citation rate = answers that cite your domain ÷ answers analysed × 100

Worked example. You run 25 prompts on Perplexity twice each, for 50 answers. Your domain appears among the sources in 12 of them, so your citation rate is 12 ÷ 50 × 100 = 24%.

  • Link position: where your first link appears in the list of sources. Lower is better: position 1 is the first source listed.
  • Citation share: your citations as a share of all the citations in the answers, which tells you how much of the source list you own against other domains.

Count your domain and its subdomains together, and measure each engine separately, because each one searches and cites in its own way.

How to earn more AI citations

  • Let AI crawlers in. Check your robots.txt with the AI crawler checker: a page the engine cannot fetch cannot be cited.
  • Answer the question directly near the top of the page, then add detail.
  • Publish specific facts, prices, specifications and data that are easy to verify.
  • Keep pages up to date, and make dates and authors visible.
  • Earn a place on the third-party pages that engines already cite for your prompts.

Common mistakes

  • Counting a citation as a mention, or the other way round.
  • Tracking only your homepage URL instead of your whole domain and subdomains.
  • Averaging engines together, when one may cite you often and another never.
  • Ignoring which competitor and third-party domains are cited in your place.

How Mencoro tracks AI citations

Mencoro records the text and the sources of every answer from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overview and Google AI Mode. ChatGPT is asked with web search on, and its sources include the pages its search retrieved even when the text does not cite them. A link is yours when it points to one of your domains or their subdomains, even if the answer never names your brand, and its position is its place in the list of sources. Your Link position is where your first link appears, averaged across passes and days, then across queries, leaving out the days you are not linked. Links also count in Share of voice as a direct, neutral reference (a weight of 0.14), but not in Coverage or Favorability, which are about what the answer says. The details are on How Mencoro works. To see which sites an engine cites for one prompt, try the free ChatGPT rank checker or Perplexity rank checker.

Which domains do the engines actually cite? Our study of the websites AI cites in Spain ranks them across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode and Perplexity.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

A citation is a source the engine links to, such as a page on your domain. A mention is your brand named in the text of the answer. They are independent: your page can be cited without your brand being named, and your brand can be named with no link to your site.
ChatGPT decides whether to search the web for a given question. When it answers from what it already knows, there are no retrieved pages to cite, so the answer has no sources even though it may still name brands.
They can, because a citation is a clickable link, but not every reader clicks: the answer itself may be enough. Treat citations as a visibility and trust signal first, and measure the visits they bring separately in your analytics as AI referral traffic.
Make sure AI crawlers can reach your pages, answer the question clearly near the top of the page, and publish specific, verifiable information. Also look at which third-party pages engines already cite for your prompts, and work on being present on them.
