What is mention rate? Definition, formula and example

Mention rate is the share of AI answers that name your brand. See the formula, a worked example, common mistakes and how Mencoro measures it as Coverage.

Mention rate is the percentage of AI-generated answers, for a defined set of prompts, that name your brand at least once: the number of answers that mention the brand divided by the number of answers analysed, multiplied by 100.

It is the most basic AI visibility metric. Before you ask how an engine talks about you, or how you compare with competitors, you need to know how often it names you at all.

How mention rate works

The unit of mention rate is the answer, not the mention. An answer that names your brand three times counts once, exactly like an answer that names it once. This keeps the metric easy to read: it answers the yes or no question “was I named?” across many answers.

What counts as a mention matters. In a strict definition, the brand has to be named in the text of the answer. A link to your domain in the sources, or an indirect reference such as “the company”, is not a mention. Links are measured with AI citation metrics instead.

Mention rate formula

Mention rate = answers that mention the brand ÷ answers analysed × 100

Worked example. You track 20 prompts on Perplexity and run each one daily for 5 days. That gives 100 answers. Your brand is named in 30 of them, so your mention rate is 30 ÷ 100 × 100 = 30%. A competitor named in 45 of the same 100 answers has a mention rate of 45%.

The denominator only includes answers that exist. If you track Google AI Overviews and Google shows no AI Overview for some searches, those searches produced no answer in which your brand could appear, so they stay out of the calculation.

Why mention rate matters for brands in AI search

AI engines usually answer with a short set of options instead of a page of ten links. If a user asks for the best tools, agencies or products in your category and your brand is not in the answer, you are not in the consideration set for that user. When the answer is enough, the user may never visit a website, so the answer itself is the shop window.

Mention rate is also the metric that the others depend on. Position, sentiment and share of voice only describe the answers in which you appear. A strong average position on a 5% mention rate means you rank well in very few answers.

Mention rate vs share of voice and citation share

  • Mention rate: how often you are named, as a share of all answers. It ignores competitors.
  • Share of voice: how much of the brand conversation is yours compared with competitors.
  • Citation share: how many of the sources cited in the answers point to your domain.

Each one answers a different question, so read them together. Our guide to GEO metrics shows how they fit in one report.

How to measure mention rate

  1. Pick prompts that reflect real buying questions. Category, comparison and problem prompts (“best CRM for small teams”) tell you more than prompts that already contain your brand name.
  2. Measure each engine separately. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews use different sources and produce different answers.
  3. Repeat each prompt. The same question can get a different answer on another run, so one answer per prompt is not enough.
  4. Match every name your brand goes by. Include short names, product names and common spellings, or you will undercount.
  5. Track the trend. Compare the same prompt set over time, and against the same competitors.

Common mistakes

  • Counting mentions instead of answers, which inflates the rate for long answers.
  • Leaving empty results in the denominator, which deflates it.
  • Counting a cited link as a mention.
  • Averaging several engines together and hiding the one where you are missing.
  • Drawing conclusions from a single run of each prompt.
  • Changing the prompt set between periods and reading the change as a trend.

How Mencoro measures mention rate

In Mencoro, mention rate is called Coverage:

Coverage = checks in which you were named ÷ checks that returned an answer × 100

A check is one run of one query on one engine (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overview or Google AI Mode) in one country, and each counts once per day it was checked. You can run 1 to 3 passes per check: named in 2 of 3 passes counts as ⅔. Checks with no answer are left out, and a link to your site alone does not count. For example, take 10 checks with 3 passes each: you are named in all 3 passes in 4 checks, in 2 of 3 passes in 3 checks and in none in the other 3. That gives (4 × 1 + 3 × ⅔ + 3 × 0) ÷ 10 × 100 = (4 + 2 + 0) ÷ 10 × 100 = 60%. The full method is on the How Mencoro works page, and the AI visibility feature shows Coverage next to Favorability and share of voice. For a free one-off sample, try the AI visibility checker.

  • AI brand mentions: what counts as a mention and how mentions are classified.
  • Share of voice: your part of the conversation against competitors.
  • Citation share: the share of cited sources that point to your domain.
  • Prompt tracking: running the same prompts on a schedule to measure metrics like this one.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

There is no universal benchmark, because it depends on how many brands compete for the same prompts and how broad your prompt set is. Compare your mention rate with your tracked competitors on the same prompts and engines, and watch the trend over several weeks rather than one reading.
Not in the strict definition. Mention rate is about the brand being named in the text of the answer. A cited link without the brand name is a citation, which you measure separately with citation metrics such as citation share or link position.
No. Mention rate tells you how often you appear, on your own, as a share of all answers. Share of voice tells you how much of the conversation is yours compared with competitors. You can have a high mention rate and a low share of voice if competitors are named more often or more favorably next to you.
AI answers vary from run to run, and engines update their models and sources. A single answer is a sample, not a fixed ranking. Repeating each prompt and reading the trend over days or weeks separates real changes from noise.
