Prompt tracking is the practice of running a fixed set of prompts through AI engines on a regular schedule and recording how each answer mentions, positions and cites your brand and its competitors, so you can measure changes in AI visibility over time.
It is the AI search equivalent of keyword rank tracking. Instead of checking where a URL ranks for a keyword, you check whether ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google’s AI features name your brand when someone asks a question about your category.
How prompt tracking works
- Choose prompts. Write the questions your buyers ask, such as “best accounting software for freelancers” or “alternatives to [competitor]”.
- Choose engines and countries. Each prompt runs separately on each engine and in each market, because answers differ between them.
- Run on a schedule. Daily, weekly or monthly, with the same prompts each time, so the results are comparable.
- Parse every answer. Record which brands are named, in what order and tone, and which sources are cited.
- Aggregate into metrics. Turn the answers into figures such as mention rate, position, sentiment and share of voice.
Why prompt tracking matters
AI engines do not publish how often people ask each question, and they do not tell brands when they are recommended. The only way to know how an engine presents you is to ask it, repeatedly, and record the answers. Because answers vary from run to run, a single manual check can mislead you in either direction. A tracked, repeated sample shows the trend: whether you are gaining or losing ground, on which topics and against which competitors.
How to choose prompts
- Start from real language. Sales calls, support tickets, reviews and the search queries that already bring you traffic show how customers phrase their questions.
- Cover the buying journey. Mix problem prompts (“how do I…”), category prompts (“best… for…”), comparison prompts (“A vs B”) and alternative prompts (“alternatives to…”).
- Keep most prompts unbranded. Branded prompts tell you what engines say about you; unbranded ones tell you whether they mention you at all.
- Group them by topic. Groups let you see where you lead and where you are missing, instead of one blended average.
How much prompt tracking costs in checks
Every answer you collect is one check, and the number of checks grows fast with each setting. A simple way to size a setup:
Checks per month = prompts × engines × countries × passes × runs per month
Worked example. 25 prompts on 3 AI engines in one country, with 1 pass per check, run weekly (4 runs a month): 25 × 3 × 1 × 1 × 4 = 300 checks. Run daily (30 runs a month), the same setup needs 2,250 checks. Weekly suits most prompts; daily is worth it for launches, PR issues and live campaigns.
Prompt tracking vs keyword rank tracking
- Output. A search ranking is a list of URLs. An AI answer is generated text with brands and sources inside it.
- Stability. Rankings move slowly. AI answers can change between two runs of the same prompt, so repetition matters.
- Main metric. In rank tracking, position comes first. In prompt tracking, how often you appear comes first, and position only describes the answers in which you appear.
Common mistakes
- Tracking only branded prompts and concluding that visibility is high.
- Checking a few prompts daily instead of covering more prompts weekly.
- Editing prompts mid-period, which breaks the comparison.
- Reading the results as what every user sees, when real answers are personalized.
- Tracking one country when you sell in several.
How Mencoro tracks prompts
In a Mencoro project you set your brand, your competitors and your queries: AI prompts for ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overview and Google AI Mode, and SERP keywords for Google SERP and Shopping. You can write them or generate suggestions, and organize them in groups. Each query runs separately on every engine and country you pick, at a daily, weekly or monthly frequency, with 1 to 3 passes per check on AI engines to smooth out answers that vary. Every hour Mencoro picks the queries that are due and asks each engine through its public interface, sending only the query text and the country, with no account or personal context. The answers become daily figures (Coverage, Favorability, Share of voice, positions) kept for 16 months. The full method, including how checks are counted against your plan, is on How Mencoro works, and the ChatGPT rank tracker shows it applied to one engine.
