GEO metrics: the KPIs that measure AI search visibility

GEO metrics are the key performance indicators that measure how visible your brand is inside AI-generated answers. Where traditional SEO metrics track your position in a list of links, GEO metrics (Generative Engine Optimization metrics) track whether engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI mention your brand, how prominently, and in what tone.

As users shift from scanning search results to reading AI answers, the metrics that describe success have to change with them. A brand can rank well in classic search and still be invisible inside the AI answers that increasingly shape decisions.

Why GEO needs its own metrics

Traditional SEO metrics assume a list of links and a click. Rankings, impressions, and organic clicks all describe a world where the user sees ten blue links and chooses one. AI answers break that model. The engine reads dozens of sources and synthesizes a single response, often without sending a click anywhere.

In that world, “what position do I rank for this keyword” is the wrong question. The right questions are: does the AI mention my brand, how does it describe me, and how do I compare to competitors in the same answer. GEO metrics exist to answer those questions.

The core GEO metrics

Mention rate

The percentage of tracked queries where your brand appears in the AI answer. This is the headline GEO metric, because you cannot shape an answer you never appear in. Track it per engine, since presence on ChatGPT can differ sharply from Google AI Overviews. See our AI visibility entry for the full picture.

Share of voice

Your share of brand mentions compared to competitors for the same set of queries, ideally weighted by mention quality rather than raw counts. A direct recommendation should not weigh the same as a passing reference in a list. Read the share of voice definition for the formula and detail.

Sentiment

Whether mentions are positive, neutral, or negative, often expressed as a positivity index from 0 to 100. Sentiment tells you whether an appearance helps or hurts. A high mention rate with negative framing is a problem, not a win. See AI brand sentiment for how this is scored.

Mention type

How the brand is referenced: a direct recommendation, a comparison against alternatives, an entry in a list, an illustrative example, or a cited source. The same mention count can mean very different things depending on type.

Citations

Which of your pages the AI links to or draws from when it answers. Citations tell you which content earns trust, so you can create more of it and strengthen the pages that already work.

Position and volatility

Where your mention sits in the answer, and how stable that position is over time. High volatility means the engine cites you inconsistently, a sign of fragile authority rather than a consolidated presence.

The two are complementary. SEO metrics still matter, because organic results feed AI answers. GEO metrics tell you what happens after the engine reads those results and writes its own response.

How to measure GEO metrics

  1. Define a fixed query set. Choose the prompts where your brand could reasonably appear, grouped into topic clusters.
  2. Sample across engines, repeatedly. Run the prompts on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Google AI Mode, more than once, since answers vary between runs.
  3. Classify every mention. Record presence, sentiment, mention type, and citations for each appearance.
  4. Benchmark against competitors. Calculate share of voice per cluster to see where you lead and where you lag.
  5. Track the trend. Watch movement over time rather than a single snapshot, and tie changes back to content or PR actions.

How Mencoro tracks GEO metrics

Mencoro turns every brand appearance across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overview, Google AI Mode, and Google SERP into concrete GEO metrics: mention rate, SERP rate, a positivity index, share of voice, mention type, and position volatility. Metrics roll up at project, cluster, and individual query level, so you can move from the big picture down to a single prompt. The search visibility feature page covers the metrics in depth, and our AI search guide explains how to act on them.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

GEO metrics are the KPIs used in Generative Engine Optimization to measure how a brand appears in AI-generated answers. The core set is mention rate, share of voice, sentiment (or positivity index), mention type, citations, and position. Together they show whether AI engines mention you, how prominently, and in what tone.
SEO metrics track rankings, clicks, and impressions in a list of links. GEO metrics track how often and how favorably AI engines reference your brand inside generated answers. SEO measures position in a SERP; GEO measures presence and framing inside an answer that may never produce a click.
Mention rate is the headline metric, since you cannot influence an answer you never appear in. But mention rate alone is misleading. Pair it with sentiment and mention type to know whether your appearances are recommendations or passing references, and with share of voice to see how you compare to competitors.
On a regular cadence, because AI answers vary between runs and shift when models update. A single snapshot is unreliable. Track weekly or monthly with a fixed query set so the trend is meaningful rather than noisy.
