Unlinked brand mentions are references to your brand, product or company name on third-party pages that do not include a hyperlink to your website.
A news article that names your company, a review that describes your product or a forum reply that recommends you without a link are all unlinked mentions. They were long treated as a link building opportunity. In AI search they matter on their own, because AI engines read what pages say about you, not only where they link.
How unlinked brand mentions work in SEO
In classic SEO, links pass authority and mentions do not, so the standard tactic is link reclamation: find pages that already mention you, then ask the author to turn the mention into a link. It works because the site has already chosen to write about you, so the request is small and relevant.
Mentions also carry meaning without a link. They connect your name with a topic, a category and other brands, and that context helps search engines understand what your brand is. That is the idea behind entity SEO.
Why they matter in AI search
AI engines build answers from text. When a model learns from the web or retrieves pages to answer a question, it reads what those pages say about each brand: which category you belong to, what you are good at, who you are compared with. A page does not need to link to you for an engine to pick up that description and repeat it.
This changes the value of an unlinked mention. A review site or industry article that describes you well, and that engines cite for your category, can shape AI answers even if it never links to your domain. A mention that describes you badly can do the same in the other direction, which makes unlinked mentions part of AI reputation management too.
Mentions and links inside AI answers
The same split appears in the AI answers themselves:
- Mentioned, not linked: the answer names your brand in its text but cites other sites as sources. The user learns your name but has no link to click.
- Linked, not mentioned: the answer cites one of your pages as a source but never names your brand in the text. Your content informed the answer, yet the reader may not know it was yours.
Both are worth knowing. The first tells you engines know your brand; the second tells you they trust your content. Treating them as one number hides which one you need to work on. See AI citations for the linked side.
How to measure unlinked mentions
Linked mention rate = mentions that link to your site / total mentions found × 100
Worked example. A search for your brand finds 120 pages that mention you. Thirty of them link to your site, so your linked mention rate is 30 / 120 × 100 = 25%, and the other 90 pages are unlinked mentions. Sort those 90 by relevance and by whether AI engines cite them for your category, and you have a shortlist for outreach and for correcting outdated information.
How to find and act on them
- Search for your name. Use your brand in quotes and exclude your own site, for example
"yourbrand" -site:yourbrand.com, and repeat for product names and common misspellings. - Set up alerts so new mentions reach you as they are published.
- Check the sources AI engines cite for your category prompts. Mentions on those pages carry the most weight for AI answers.
- Decide per page. Request a link where it helps the reader, request a correction where the facts are wrong, and leave the rest alone.
Common mistakes
- Asking for a link on every mention. Mass requests annoy editors and damage the relationship that produced the mention.
- Ignoring what the mention says. An inaccurate description is a bigger problem than a missing link, especially on a page AI engines cite.
- Counting only links. A backlink report shows who links to you, not who talks about you. Much of what shapes AI answers never appears in it.
How Mencoro separates mentions from links
Inside AI answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overview and Google AI Mode, Mencoro records mentions and links separately. A mention is your brand named in the text of the answer. A link is a source the answer returns that points to one of your domains or subdomains, even if the answer never names you. Your domain inside a URL counts as a link, not as a mention.
Coverage and Favorability use mentions only, because they are about what the answer says. Links feed Link position and Share of voice, where a link to your domain counts as a direct, neutral reference. So you can see the answers that name you without citing you, and the ones that cite you without naming you. The methodology page has the exact rules, the visibility feature shows both in the app, and the free AI visibility checker shows which sites AI engines cite for your category.
