Entity SEO is the practice of helping search engines and AI models recognize your brand, its people, products and topics as distinct, well-defined entities, with consistent facts and clear relationships to other entities.

Instead of optimizing a page for a string of words, you make sure machines know which thing those words refer to, what it is and how it connects to everything around it.

What is an entity?

An entity is a thing that can be identified on its own: an organization, a person, a product, a place or a concept. “Apple” the company and “apple” the fruit share a name but are different entities. Search engines store entities and the relationships between them in knowledge graphs. Google introduced its Knowledge Graph in 2012 under the idea of “things, not strings”, and it is what feeds the knowledge panels you see next to results.

How entity SEO works

An engine connects a name to an entity from several signals:

  • Consistency: the same name, description and key facts on your site and across the web.
  • Structured data: schema.org markup such as Organization, Product or Person, with sameAs links to your official profiles. See structured data for AI.
  • Trusted references: knowledge bases, industry directories and press that describe you in the right category.
  • Co-occurrence: your name appearing next to the topics, competitors and problems you are associated with.
  • Topical depth: content on your own site that covers your subject thoroughly, which ties your entity to it. See topical authority.

To recommend your brand, an AI model has to know that it exists, what it does and which category it belongs to. Language models work with meaning, not exact keywords, so a clear entity makes it easier for them to place you in the right answers and state the right facts about you.

Weak entities cause predictable problems. A brand that shares its name with a common word or another company gets confused with it. A brand described differently on every site gets vague or contradictory descriptions. A brand never mentioned alongside its category rarely appears when buyers ask about that category, however good its pages are.

How to apply entity SEO

  1. Fix one official name and one-line description, and use them everywhere.
  2. Publish the key facts on an About page: what you do, who founded the company, when and where, and what you sell.
  3. Add Organization markup with name, logo, URL and sameAs links, and check it with a schema validator.
  4. Align your official profiles: social profiles, business directories and knowledge bases such as Wikidata, if your brand meets their criteria.
  5. Earn mentions in the right context. Coverage that describes you within your category strengthens the link between your entity and that topic, with or without a hyperlink. See unlinked brand mentions.
  6. Test the result. Ask AI engines what your brand is and who your competitors are, and check whether you appear for category prompts that do not name you.

Common mistakes

  • Several names for one brand. “Acme Inc”, “Acme Software” and “AcmeSoft” across different profiles make it harder to join the dots.
  • Markup that says what the page does not. Structured data should describe visible content, not add claims that appear nowhere else.
  • sameAs links to the wrong profiles. Link only to official profiles you control, and keep them up to date.
  • Forgetting products and people. Your products and founders are entities too, and buyers ask about them by name.

How Mencoro relates to entity SEO

Mencoro does not audit your entity, but it shows the result that entity work aims for: whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overview and Google AI Mode name your brand for the prompts you choose. In a Mencoro project you define your brand by its names and its domains, and each competitor the same way. Mention detection goes by identity, not exact spelling, so “TimesRoom Barcelona” counts for “Times Room BCN”, but a translated name does not; list every name your brand actually uses.

Coverage on unbranded category prompts tells you whether engines connect your brand to that category. Each answer also shows untracked competitors, other brands offering the same thing, which reveals which entities the engines place next to you. See the methodology page for how mentions are detected and the competitor analysis feature for the side-by-side view.

  • Structured data for AI: markup that describes your content in a format machines can read.
  • Topical authority: the depth of expertise a site shows on a subject.
  • E-E-A-T: Google's framework of experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust.
  • Semantic search: search that matches meaning rather than exact words.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Keyword SEO targets the words people type. Entity SEO makes sure search engines and AI models know which thing those words refer to: your company, your product, your founder. The two work together, but entities are what let an engine connect your brand to a topic even when the exact keyword is missing.
No. A Wikipedia article helps well-known organizations, but it has strict notability rules and many brands do not qualify. Consistent facts on your own site, structured data, official profiles and coverage in trusted industry sources do most of the work.
Ask them. Prompts such as "what is [brand]" or "who makes [product]" show whether the description, category and facts are right. Then check whether you appear for unbranded category prompts, which shows whether engines connect your brand to the topic.
Organization on your home or About page, with your official name, logo, URL and sameAs links to your official profiles. Then add Product, Person or LocalBusiness where they describe what the page is actually about.
